Comments / Thoughts / What You Learned / Challenges: My preceptor gave me the book “Random Family” to read to get a better understanding of what life in the Bronx is like, specifically for the people in the blocks surrounding our building. I learned that you cannot judge the decisions these people have made or the paths they have taken to get where they are. Escaping the environment that they grow up in is extremely difficult, and from the moment they are born a lot of them are surrounded by drugs and sexual abuse, and even when someone tries to escape their situation, they have family or friends pulling them back in despite their best efforts. It really impacted how I interact with and respond to clients in counseling sessions.
