Week 24 – Clinical – Dialysis Center

Date: 4/13/18                           Rotation: Clinical            Location: West Nassau Dialysis

Activities / Assignments:

  • Observed patient counseling based on monthly blood work results
  • Counseled patients based on monthly blood work results
  • Updated nutrition bulletin board in lobby
  • Brainstormed for lobby day

Comments / Thoughts / What You Learned / Challenges: I spent the first couple of days just observing as my preceptor handed out the monthly report cards and counseled the patients based on them. It centered mostly around phosphorus, calcium, and potassium. Later in the week I handed out report cards and counseled the patients on my own.

I also researched the information for the bulletin board in the lobby. It was about a “Renal MyPlate”. I have attached a picture of the final product.

I also began brainstorming for the first lobby day. The idea is to create educational games and samples for the patients in order to help teach them about different nutrition topics while also engaging with them.
