Comments / Thoughts / What You Learned / Challenges: I reviewed a chart created by the graduate student participating in the systematic literature review. This chart included data for all of the studies being considered for inclusion in the systematic literature review. Included was the article title, data source, demographics, diagnostic tools, and findings.
I met with my preceptor and the graduate student to go over the article data chart, and to discuss next steps, which was using the data abstraction form for each article. We discussed which aspects of the form to use for the initial abstraction process, and also what order to go in. We decided to fill out the high-lighted portions of the form (included below), and to go in alphabetical order by the lead authors last name (automatically done in EndNote, which was the application used to share all of the article PDFs with me).
I struggled with using this tool at first because it was unfamiliar to me. When we were discussing it in our meeting I thought it would be easy, but once I began using it on my own I found that I was very much mistaken. Each article presented the information differently, and they didn’t necessarily use the same wording as the data abstraction form, so it took me a full day to ge through just one article.
